Equine Internal Medicine

Many equine internal medicine problems can be managed in the field if desired by the client. This requires a cooperative effort among the veterinarian, the client, and the equine patient. Diagnostic procedures such as lab tests, ultrasounds, and radiographs can often be done in the field, or in some instances, may need to be referred to a local specialty facility.

Once a diagnosis is made, the responsibility for treatment largely falls on the shoulders of the owner/agent. Resolution of the case may depend on whether a medication can be successfully administered by a client, either an oral medication given at specific times or an injection. The skill, commitment, and comfort level of the owner/agent, as well as the tolerance level of the horse, are all factors which influence the outcome of the case.

In some instances, follow-up visits will be required to monitor treatment and confirm successful resolution of the case.
