Coggins Test in Orange County
A Coggin’s Test is a blood test for a disease called Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA). This is a disease that the United States Government has decided to eradicate in this country by destroying all horses which are carriers of the disease. Fortunately, we do not have a problem with Equine Infectious Anemia in
To cross state lines, horses need to have a Health Certificate, valid for 30 days from issue, and a negative Coggin’s test, which is usually valid for six to twelve months.
To receive a Health certificate, the horse needs to be examined by a Federally Accredited Veterinarian and a blood sample is taken and submitted to the lab for analysis.( In California, these tests are almost always negative)
Once the negative Coggin’s report is received, which can take several days from the time the sample is drawn, the Health Certificate can be completed and the horse is officially authorized to cross state lines.
Please be aware, crossing state lines without the appropriate paperwork could be prosecuted as a Federal offense.
At Equine Veterinary Associates Inc., we encourage clients to begin the Health Certificate/ Coggin’s test process one week before their planned departure if possible. A RUSH Health Certificate and Coggin’s can be done with a 24-36 hour turn-around time, but additional charges apply.
